Act Like You’re Human - Being disabled in public
http://oneopalfruit.blogspot.com/2010/07/act-like-youre-human.html
I mostly liked the story quoted in this entry, I believe the person in it had good intentions and I like the message behind it. Treat people with dignity and respect, and regard them all as human being deserving of affection.
But excuse me for one moment, what if the disabled person in question hadn’t wanted someone to sit next to him? What if he’d felt patronised because this person deliberately came and sat next to him because he was disabled?
We’re not all the same, us in the disabled community. We’re as diverse as any other group of people. We’re individuals.
And for me, that includes sometimes wanting people to fuck off and leave me alone. Stop frickin’ staring at me. No, I don’t want your help. Maybe I wanted to sit by myself, I’m not a charity case.
I absolutely do believe we should treat disabled people in the same way as we treat non disabled people. But for fucks sake, pity doesn’t help and neither does a condescending ‘able bodied person patting disabled person on the head’ rant.
