Avoiding -Ism bullshit is not about you. It’s not about you not “looking” racist or cissexist or ableist or fatphobic or sexist or etc. It’s not about your fragile reputation as a PERSON OF REPUTE AND COOLNESS.
It’s about the people you hurt.
When you use a slur, when you side step and stare fearfully at that black guy who’s just trying to get to the store, when you give the “wtf are you” look to a trans person who just wants to be left alone, when you make a stupid unfunny joke about women and make the only girl in the group feel unsafe, when you give a look of utter revulsion to the fat girl who never asked for your fucking opinion, when you talk shit about immigrants as though you even had a fucking clue, when you exclaim about how your life would be over if you ever got disabled, right next to a pwd who’s life is still going.
It’s not about how you look to others.
It’s about the systems you prop up with the crap you say and do. It’s about how these systems fuck over entire groups of people, crush them and steal away opportunities in subtle and nasty ways, while they elevate and privilege others.
Next time you’re around someone who you know doesn’t have the privilege you do don’t think to yourself, “shit, I don’t want to look -ist here, I better not fuck up” \
Instead think, “shit, I don’t want to hurt this person, I better not fuck up. Cuz they deserve better than this.”
